Chasing Rainbows: The Road to Oz will open the 2019-2020 season at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. The new Broadway-bound musical about the early life of Judy Garland, from her vaudeville sister act through her rise at MGM to win the role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, will play from September 26-October 27, 2019.
Chasing Rainbows features book by Marc Acito, musical adaptation & additional music by David Libby, and conceived by and additional lyrics by Tina Marie Casamento.
The principal cast features Ruby Rakos as Judy Garland/Frances Gumm, Tony Award nominee Max Von Essen as Frank Gumm, Olivier Award-winner Lesli Margherita as Ethel Gumm, Karen Mason as Ma Lawlor/Kay Koverman, Stephen DeRosa as Louis B. Mayer, Michael Wartella as Mickey Rooney, and Colin Hanlon as Roger Edens.
The production team includes scenic design by Alexander Dodge, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Matt Kraus, projection design by Peter Nigrini, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe, and makeup design by Dena Olivieri. The production stage manager is Bonnie Panson. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting.
Using the Sony Music/Feist Robbins catalog, Chasing Rainbows brings contemporary life to songs introduced by or associated with Garland, including “Over the Rainbow,” “You Made Me Love You,” “Everybody Sing,” “In Between,” and “Dear Mr. Gable,” among others.
Chasing Rainbows is the first stage, film or television property about the life of Judy Garland to receive the endorsement of the Garland Estate.
Garland historian John Fricke, author of The Wizard of Oz: An Illustrated Companion to the Timeless Classic, is a consultant on the project.
